Did the Nazis understand Darwin or did they distort his ideas for propaganda purposes?
The Nazis twisted Darwin's theory of natural selection. They used it to portray human life as a struggle between various races for control of the earth's resources. This shallow reading of Darwin became a pseudo-justification for violence and brutality towards 'the enemies of the state'. Hitler said openly that pity and compassion were only to be shown to fellow Aryans and never to other races. This is the ideological basis of Auschwitz. However, this is not the fault of Darwin, this is what Churchill called 'perverted science', the Nazis 'forgot' that we also have free will and the ability to make choices about how we treat other people.

This is vital evidence that Hitler ordered the mass murder of the Jewish people. Rudolf Hoss here testifies that Hitler gave the order to Himmler who then gave it to Hoss. Hoss carried out the order at Auschwitz Death Camp in Poland. Why would Hoss lie? He knew he was going to be executed by the allies and his demeanour at the trial was almost casual and matter of fact. He described the holocaust as a factory manager might describe the problems of running a big factory. There is even pride when he explains how he devised more efficient killing systems in the gas chambers. Hoss was hanged in Poland for crimes against humanity.

TOK ESSAYS DUE FROM GRADE 12 STUDENTS - EMAIL YOUR OWN TEACHER PLEASE
Dear Grade 12 Students:
- Thank you to those who have already emailed their TOK Essay to their TOK teacher.
- The essay is from the special handout I gave you in June.
- Only Ms Asha's class should email me.
- Ms Meenakshy's class should email Mr Navros.
- This week TOK teachers will meet to mark the essays and moderate the marks as a team.
- This is the reason we have asked you to send a hardcopy to the office with your teacher's name on top, so that we can have them ready for you with feedback once school starts.
All teachers will be working in school from August 5th so email me and cc your teacher if there are any special issues.
