History in Film Club The Movie Gladiator - Hollywood or History?

Image result for film gladiator historical accuracy

Are movies with historical themes required to be entertaining or historically accurate?
Should we expect the films to focus on spectacle and drama rather than historical accuracy?
Students in our Film in History Club were asked to research either Emperor Marcus Aurelius or his son Commodus and to share their views here in the comments section.

Art, Music, Culture, Historical Legacy - aesthetic questions about beauty and complex questions about music and politics?

AOK - Art, Music, Human Sciences (Culture), WOK - Sense Pereption, Emotion, Imagination, - can you think of any others and what Knowlege Questions come to mind regarding music in general (is it a language, is a form of communiction?) - to what extent do our own cultural perspectives (personal knowledge and cultural environment influence how we determine beauty in art?)

Different perspectives -

Can we agree on a universal definition of beauty in  art? What did Keats mean when he wrote "Beauty is truth, truth beauty'?

Politics and history -

Is our perception of music influnced by its cultural associations - for example if Wagner was Hitler's favourite composer, can we separate that fact from our experience of Wagner and how important is the work of Jewish conductor Daniel Barenboim in choosing to promote Wagner's music despite Hitler's love of Wagner?

TOK Presentation Model 2015 - excellent video

Donald Trump:Mexico sends drugs, criminals and rapists to US | México env...

Is this language from the speaer legitimate commentary on illegal immigration in the USA?

Or is it deliberately inflammatory rhetoric to stir up the baser demons of fear rather than the 'better angels of our nature'? If we use Language and Emotion and Reason as WOKs, can we can form a KQ about this clip from Mr Trump?

TOK ESSAY TITLES MAY 2017

There will be a special meeting of all students and teachers in late September to discuss best practice in exploring these titles.

1. “It is only knowledge produced with difficulty that we truly value.”To what extent do you agree with this statement?
2. “Facts are needed to establish theories but theories are needed to make sense of facts.”Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge.
3. Should key events in the historical development of areas of knowledge always bejudged by the standards of their time?
4. “In the production of knowledge, traditions of areas of knowledge offer correctivesfor ways of knowing.”  To what extent do you agree with this statement?
5. Given access to the same facts, how is it possible that there can be disagreementbetween experts in a discipline?  Develop your answer with reference to two areas of knowledge.
6. “Humans are pattern  seeking animals and we are adept at finding patternswhether they exist or not” (adapted from Michael Shermer).  Discuss knowledgequestions raised by this idea in two areas of knowledge.

THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE ORAL PRESENTATION - WHY THE FORMS ARE VERY IMPORTANT - TK/PPD FORM

http://blog.joekoss.me/2016/08/tok-presentation-as-compliance-not.html#comment-form

This year marked the second year of using the new holistic IB rubrics for marking both the Theory of Knowledge essay and presentation. It was also the second year of the TOK Presentation being subjected to moderation procedures by external IB examiners. The moderation procedures follow more or less the same procedures IB uses for all other IA moderation, using dynamic sampling and tolerance bands.

Except for one glaring difference: the work being moderated for the TOK Presentation is not the product itself, as it is with all other externally moderated IAs. Rather the work moderated is a "Presentation Planning Document (TK/PPD)," which asks the students to, in 500 words or less, describestateexplainoutline, and show how their presentation "succeeds in showing that TOK concepts can have practical application."

What Is the Difference Between a Raven and a Crow

This video is a good example of using Sense Perception (especially our sight and hearing) to distinguish birds that may seem similar. So here is an example of a Real Life Situation (we have both species in South Mumbai) where our knowledge can be expanded using technology but also our own observations, So shared knowledge and personal knowledge can become part of the zone of exchange.

My thanks to the original poster on youtube for the video and this information:

In this video we show " What is the difference between a raven and a crow ?" Know that in the western US we have Common Ravens and American Crows, so that's what this clip is comparing.

After viewing this video, test your Raven knowledge or learn more about ravens and crows by taking our "Raven Crow Training Test." Twelve action clips of real birds with original sound just as you would find them in the wild plus three bonus clips challenges all corvid lovers to try to identify the Common Raven from the American Crow.

Examples from all over the western United States include; The Grand Canyon - Arizona, Santa Fe and New Mexico, Olympic Peninsula - Washington, Bryce - Utah, Crystal Cove State Park - California and more.

However, I really posted it simply because it's beautiful.

The women denied rights to own land - BBC News

Students are reminded that there is a difference between topics for discussion and defining the TOK Knowledge Questions which are embedded in Real Life Situations.
One way to approach this challenge is to use questions to explore the data and perspectives in any RLS. Students should make full use of the excellent Michael Dunn videos to help them understand the difference between a topic, a first order KNOWLEDGE QUESTION and a second order KQ.
If you do not persevere until you acquire these competencies your journey in TOK will be incomplete and your assessment outcomes will be compromised.
One of the most important aspects of Knowledge as a construct is to always look at the source.
There is no 'perfect' source but students should know that not all sources are equally authoritative or credible. While healthy and respectful disagreement is part of a democratic discourse and critical thinking, learners should expect higher standards of CREDIBILITY from say the websites of reputable universities and respected media organisations.
Not all sources are of equal authority.
Does this apply to all websites and organisations such as the websites of the Flat Earth Society.
http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/cms/
These are sincere people and their views should be debated with respect and without rancour.
However, if we apply critical thinking we can see that their views are based on a denial of the shared knowledge of the mainstream academic world.
Now back to the BBC video above:
For example:
Watch the video. You will have a response. Is your Way of Knowing about this video affected by your own personal knowledge and the shared knowledge of your culture, class or society.
Is there any bias you can identify in your reaction.
Now after reflecting on your personal response and talking and listening to your classmates, be open-minded to other points of view and perspectives.
Now look at the images and language of the video. Is it fair and balanced?
Now progress to a more TOK approach to the video, using the KNOWLEDGE FRAMEWORK to read/listen closely to the language of the text.
KNOWLEDGE QUESTION
How can we know to what extent does gender imbalance in land ownership impact food production in some countries. What limitations does the commentary suggest with the phrase "in countries where data exists"?

The Maltreatment of Jewish–Austrians - a warning from history?

Racism begins with rhetoric and becomes incrementally more abusive of our fellow human beings and denies them their rights. So extremists always create "Tbe Other" to justify exclusion and hate and violence. Internationalmindedness embraces the common humanity of all people who share this planet and rejects supremacist views of any kind.

Hilde Schramm - the 79-year-old daughter of Hitler's architect, Albert Speer (above) - has spent a life campaigning for peace, fighting racism, and supporting Germany's green movement. This year she decided to help two Syrian refugees, but they have ended up helping her in return.
