BBC World News - Hikikomori in Japan

Can this phenomenon help us understand Kafka's novel "METAMORPHOSIS" and other problems of social isolation?

  1. I absolutely loved the connection between Hikikomori in Japan and the the theme of isolation in Kafka's 'Metamorphosis'. I never knew that a phenomenon like 'Hikikomori' existed, where adolescents or adults withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement.
In the Metamorphosis, Samsa's transformation to a 'monstrous vermin' reflects Kafka’s view of the desperation connected with the human struggle for redemption. This phenomenon helps us understand Kafka's novel "Metamorphosis' with a deeper and more meaningful understanding. I really enjoyed making connection between the two concepts. Extremely interesting !

  2. The Metamorphosis is one of my favourite books. The association between Hikikomori and Gregor's condition is very helpful in regards to understanding Gregor Samsa as a character. The depression faced by these Hikikomori survivors and their way to overcome it is very admirable. After seeing this video, it makes my wonder if Gregor received the same support and help from his family, would he overcome his depression and fears? The video was very insightful and helped me gain a deeper understanding of The Metamorphosis.
