Learning a new term was definitely interesting, what was more interesting was that the meaning of a simple word 'interpretation' was embedded at the crux of this. Knowledge of Hermeneutics will definitely help me understand the things around me in a new way
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this video and our class discussion on it. I think the study of hermeneutics is so relevant, as language, tradition, the nature of perception and life itself is based on interpretation and understanding. We talked about integrating the familiar into the unfamiliar as per experience and history through art and culture, and how interpretation broadens horizons in terms of opinion. Tradition is crucial as it gives us the tools of discovery, but understanding the dichotomy between cultural respect and blind tradition is equally important -- and I'm glad we talked about it in class. I was also intrigued by notion of hermeneutics being the antidote to fundamentalism, and how hermeneutics is not relativism but a critical realism wherein personal engagement is consequential. This was a great video, thanks for putting it up!
