IB World Student Conferences JULY 2012 - SPAIN and CANADA
A great opportunity for students, please click on the IBO link below for more information.
Skills and relationships that will last a lifetime
- Segovia, Spain, 2–6 July 2012
- Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 23–27 July 2012
The International Baccalaureate (IB) has created a series of World Student Conferences to bring together IB Diploma Programme students from around the world to experience what it really means to “think globally”.
At two conferences—one in Segovia, Spain, and the other in Vancouver, British Columbia—students will be exposed to a mix of cultures and form new friendships as they explore ways to make our world a better, more peaceful place.
These chaperoned events each last five days and will provide those who attend with an exceptional opportunity to develop leadership skills and international understanding.
This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime.

UK and Argentina both claim the Falkland Islands - how can we know the truth of these claims?
Nearly three decades after the Falklands War, tensions between the UK
and Argentina have resurfaced. The UK insists the Falkland Islands are
rightfully the UK's. The Argentine government maintains the islands,
which it calls Las Malvinas, belong to it. But what are the details of
each side's legal, historical and geographical claims for ownership? This is a good example of knowledge claim, knowledge counterclaims, knowledge issues (how can we know the truth about who has a rightful claim to the islands?), ways of knowing (patriotic emotion versus reason, language as a source of knowledge or propaganda). The Areas of Knowledge would include History and Ethics (in international relations and the use of force by both sides in the war there in the 1980s). Examine this BBC page and see if the BBC manages to overcome any British bias to give a fair and balanced report of both sides of the question.
Is this a fair report? If yes, then it's a good example of reason triumphing over emotion, what do you think?

Students will write Job Descriptions for EXCOM Positions/election process.
- Dear students of Grade X1
- Congratulations to all candidates in the presidential campaign. The students have selected our Student Leadership Team of Shivaan, Radhika and Anmol but there will lots of opportunities for the other 5 candidates to particiapte in Student Action Groups working with the Excom Officers.
- The elections will be held in English class on Monday and Tuesday. Our Principal, Mr Gardner will announce the results after school on Tuesday.
- I have not produced detailed job descriptions for the EXCOM as I think the titles are largely self-explanatory. I have suggested that Excom will meet with me and Mr Navros lunchtime on Wednesday and begin the process of writing their own more detailed job descriptions and short constitution or charter. We will also set a list of targets and goals, debate them where necessary, build consensus and then Excom will meet with the Principal and Teacher Mentors by March 1st latest with an action plan.
- Excom will organise the elections for Class Reps for Grades 8/9/10 next week but Grade 10 students will not be asked to spend too much time on events until August.
- Excom will meet as a club in club time in the fourth quarter. I have asked Mr Navros to join me as teacher-mentor during that time to work with the Student Council.
- Workload: it is expected that each Excom officer will lead a Student Action Group of committed students who will work as a team around their special area of responsibility.
- Fine-tuning: any new project needs to be fine-tuned as the structure takes shapes. The teacher mentors will work with the student teams to define roles, initiate projects and support students as we launch the process in our school community. By the time our next elections take place in December, we should have a smooth system of student representation, which is running like a train on a railway line. Right now, we are building the train, laying the tracks and setting out the road map for our various destinations. The work we do now will create a strong foundation for short and long term success.

Exploring Issues with Knowledge-TOK Presentation
This video reminds us that TOK is about the process of the four ways of knowing. In your presentation, you are exploring the WOKs, you are not primarily trying to persuade an audience as in a debate. It is really an analysis of how we acquire knowledge. So a presentation on say "The Ethics of Capital Punishment" will be quite different as a TOK presentation than a debate. See the assessment rubric to grasp the special language and concepts necessary in a TOK essay or presentation. If you simply debate the topic, without exploring the 'TOK in the topic", you will not score highly on the rubric. scale.
SENSE PERCEPTION and LANGUAGE RESOURCES
Hi everyone - the long post below sets out the objectives for your independent study at home to support the teaching and learning in the classroom. Also, I will post various clips here from Youtube to support your understanding of the WOKs in real life situations (unreliability of eye witness testimony, pilot spatial disorientation and propaganda in "1984" and in Hitler's Germany, Stalin's government etc)
Q3 Assessment: An essay on WoKs will be set for all students across the year group and I will post this title tomorrow.
