China Lost 14 Million People in World War II. Why Is This Forgotten? Historian Rana Mitter believes a better understanding of China's future actions can follow a truer understanding of its World War II past. The Japanese occupation of China was noted for its brutality. The Japanese were allies of the Nazis and believed that they were racially superior to other races. The Japanese view of the war argues that it was a war of liberation against European colonialists but why did so many Asian people die at the hands of Japanese soldiers? China and Korea remain bitter about this issue and the Chinese are also angry that their part of World War 2 is overshadowed by the stories of Pearl Harbour, D-Day or Stalingrad. How many Western historians have bothered to study the Chinese experience of the war?
