Stephen Fry - Who do you think you are? - fascinating journey as he explores his ancestry.

Shared knowledge in the records of public documents in Europe become personal knowledge as Stephen Fry explores the fate of his Jewish relatives. He also muses on his public image as he's often described as  'quintessentially English'. Areas of knowledge include history, human sciences and personal identity. In it's own way this programme helps us understand the terrible horror of the holocaust as it swept Jewish families from the homes in Nazi states.

Labour is blossoming or dancing where

The body is not bruised to pleasure soul.

Nor beauty born out of its own despair,

Nor blear-eyed wisdom out of midnight oil.

O chestnut-tree, great-rooted blossomer,

Are you the leaf, the blossom or the bole?

O body swayed to music, O brightening glance,

How can we know the dancer from the dance?

Bucket List Campaign by Malaysia Airlines stirs controversy

In this report we can and should sympathise with the criticism of the airline for using the term "Bucket List" in a campaign. But is it possible that the advertising agency staff were not native speakers and did not fully understand a term they may have first seen on a Hollywood film? WOK here are language, emotion, reason and sense perception. There may be others too. What do you think?

Narendra Modi is among the sharpest I have met: Fareed Zakaria CNN

This post is not partisan but rather noting the views of an Indian expat Muslim, who is also a noted commentator and respected speaker at Harvard and other top universities. All people of good will must hope that Mr Modi will promote peace and prosperity within India and beyond with its neighbours. These are humanitarian goals which we can all share.

Politics is often clouded by our 'tribal' emotions when reason and rational thinking can offer us a way forward.

"The Informant" starring Matt Damon - Trailer

Usual 'dramatic licence' but based on a true story.   You can read the book BY Author: KurtEichenwald

Mark Whitacre, a high-level employee at ADM (Archer Daniels Midland), the "supermarket to the world", wears an FBI wire to uncover a major price-fixing scam. ADM pleads guilty and pays a $100 million fine, however Whitacre ends up doing more time than the corrupt leaders he helped to capture.
The Book:

INFORMANT; THE (MOVIE TIE IN) (ENGLISH) (PAPERBACK)

Buy Informant; The (movie tie in) (English)The Informant is Mark Whitacre, a senior executive with America's most powerful food giant, who put his career and his family's safety at risk to become a confidential government witness. Using Whitacre's secret recordings and a team of agents, the FBI uncovered the corporation's scheme to steal millions of dollars from its own customers. But as the FBI closed in on their target, they suddenly realised that Whitacre wasn't quite playing the game they'd thought - This is the gripping account of how a corporate golden boy turned into an FBI mole, and went on to double-cross both the authorities and his employers in one of the most extraordinary cases of global corporate corruption in the last thirty years.

Saving art from the Nazis - THE MONUMENTS MEN - BOOK BY ROBERT M. EDSEL and film by GEORGE CLOONEY

From Wikipedia page on the film: Film critic Peter Travers in Rolling Stone Magazine gave it 3 out of 4 stars, noting that while some of the dialog and emotions seemed inauthentic, the physical production and cinematography was "exquisite," with shooting done on locations in Germany and England.[27] In comparing the film with current ones, he considers it a "proudly untrendy, uncynical movie," where the story involved people seeking something more valuable than money: "Clooney [as director] feels there's much to be learned from these unsung art warriors. . . . What Clooney has crafted in The Monuments Men is a movie about aspiration, about culture at risk, about things worth fighting for. I'd call that timely and well worth a salute."[27]

Historian Alex von Tunzelmann, writing for The Guardian, noted several historical faults and said of the plot, "If you're getting the sense that the film is episodic and poorly structured, unfortunately you'd be right", and "There are far too many characters, so the screenplay splits them up into little groups and sends them off on various errands. Some of these are more exciting than others – but they do not add up to a satisfying plot. A TV series might have been a better vehicle for the "monuments men" stories than a feature film... The story is fascinating, but this film's good intentions are hampered by its lack of pace, direction, tone and properly fleshed-out characters."[28]
Mr C comments - it's not a perfect film but I strongly recommend it as it helps us reflect on the place of art in society. It also reminds us what kind of world we would be living in today if Hitler had won and created a global society where independent critical thinking would have been a crime.
I will include this film in our Senior Film Club list in the coming year.

Is there a book? Yes! Author Robert M. Edsel.

The Irish Times - Fri, Jun 20, 2014 - D- Day was important - so were the battles against the Nazis in Russia and the East.

Irish Times article comparing the well-known battles against Nazi Germany in Western Europe with the often overlooked battles on the Easter Front - where the Russians suffered horrific casualties in a war Hitler described as a 'war of annihilation'.

Time for Bagration commemoration: looking to the Eastern front - European News | Latest News from Across Europe | The Irish Times - Fri, Jun 20, 2014

In Normandy, the Germans deployed 11 divisions against the initial D-Day landings. In the east, the Germans had 228 divisions. The casualties of this operation were equally staggering. The German historian Karl-Heinz Freiser has calculated German casualties at more than 399,000 killed, wounded, missing and POW. A conservative estimate of Russian casualties is more than 180,000. Total Russian wartime deaths still remain unclear with estimates ranging from 18 to 24 million, both military and civilian. The worst damage inflicted on the Germans occurred on the eastern front but at a huge cost to the Russians. The Bagration campaign also saw a further hardening of the attitudes between the combatants on the eastern front. The scene was set for the merciless campaigns of 1945, culminating in the brutal battle of Berlin.

NAZI BOOK BURNING BY STUDENTS OF FAMOUS LITERATURE BANNED BY HITLER.
Most societies use some censorship - but why is censorship always extreme in extreme societies? How is it linked to critical thinking or lack of critical thinking in the general population?

From Socrates we learned the importance of using questions to pursue knowledge.

Plato's "Republic" teaches us through the parable of The Cave. Do not confuse appearance and reality.

What can we learn from modern writers?
Should we watch film versions of books before or after we read the book or not at all? Opening scene from film version of Ian McEwan's "Enduring Love". The title is ironic and ambiguous in a way that the movie cannot convey - read the novel first! Buy a book and feed your mind.

2. Fareed Zakaria article on leadership styles with some interesting parallels between Eisenhower approach and Obama.
A Democratic Advisory Council committee headed by Acheson called Eisenhower’s foreign policy “weak, vacillating, and tardy.” But Eisenhower kept his powder dry, confident that force was not the only way to show strength. “I’ll tell you what leadership is,” he told his speechwriter. “It’s persuasion — and conciliation — and education — and patience . It’s long, slow, tough work. That’s the only kind of leadership I know — or believe in — or will practice.”

'Arrogance' of ignoring need for sleep

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-27286872

Prof Russell Foster, at the University of Oxford, said people were getting between one and two hours less sleep a night than 60 years ago.
He said: "We are the supremely arrogant species; we feel we can abandon four billion years of evolution and ignore the fact that we have evolved under a light-dark cycle.
"What we do as a species, perhaps uniquely, is override the clock. And long-term acting against the clock can lead to serious health problems."
He says this is an issue affecting the whole of society, not just shift workers.
Prof Foster said that this was an acute problem in teenagers and he had met children who sleep by popping their parent's sleeping tablets in the evening and then downing three Red Bulls in the morning.

Learning in a Digitalized Age: Plugged In, Turned On, Totally Engaged?

Fascinating new book on the role of technology in education.

All professional learning communities agree that there is added value in utilizing technologies to enhance and facilitate student success. This volume seeks a critical and informed answer to one of the most important educational questions of the day: how successful will learners be in the digital age?
Here, writers with real hands-on experience in the field challenge many of the assumptions about teaching and learning in the digital age. It is relevant and important for all those interested and concerned about the kinds of debates, arguments and ideas which are influencing and changing the nature of teaching and learning in the early decades of the 21st century.
These contributors, from around the world and across all sections and levels of the educational sector, share their experiences of working with educational technologies, mobile and digital learning in their day-to-day lives in schools, colleges and universities.
The main themes, arguments and reflections found highlight the dramatic effects and changes technology is having on the human experience generally and in teaching and learning in particular.
The editor: Lawrence Burke is an experienced international educator of 25 years. In the 2011/12 academic year the Higher Colleges of Technology, Al Ain Men’s College awarded him Teacher of the Year.
This debate is everywhere but it's important to promote the core skills in students for modern education - that is the power to think critically, to use technology as a tool and to value the arts as well as the sciences.
