SON RISE Vibha Bakshi Documentary School Viewing Response

A powerful documentary. Everyone should see this and support the work of  Dr. Vibha Bakshi who has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Boston University. Her film "Son Rise" is a tale of suffering based on gender bias but also hope through some enlightened leaders in village councils. This is both a local issue in Haryana and and a global issue for human rights equality.

  1. Vibha Bakshi collaborated with the UN for her film "Son Rise". Her main aim is to create a gender equal society where every woman knows her rights and where her voice can be heard. She has shown the dark sides of our country in her movie, some parts and issues that we may have heard of but don't face them ourselves in the bubble we live in.

  2. This documentary really shed some light on a social issue that affects everyone including men women and children. Rape and gender inequality are issues that don’t only impact women but men too. This issue can only be resolved if men change their mentality in all regions of the world not only India.

  3. This documentary is an eye opener, shows us how equality is an important topic, which people struggle with all over the world. Equality for women isn't a women's issue. When women fulfill their potential, everyone benefits.

  4. The documentary was extremely well made and it was an honour to watch this exclusively. The effective way in which the message about "women equality" and "child infanticide" is shown is truly heartwarming and gives a view of the pathos of villages in Northern India. I would also like to say that it had an impact on me personally as I was inspired by the story of Jitender and sincerely hope that they win the case which shows how a small change can be symbolic of a huge step towards women justice.

Dr Vibha Bakshi's documentary,"Son Rise," is based on gender inequality and the rising hope for the betterment of society through brave leaders who are now taking some steps to achieve gender equality in their respective societies. The documentary was able to provide us an insight into a global perspective and opened our eyes to horrific events taking place around our own 'privileged' lives, where we are not aware of such circumstances. It has inspired us to take action and spread the word all around in order to make the society a better place.

  7. Son rise was a perception shifting doccumentary for me.I heared the stories of the victoms of rape and the mothers bullied into infanticide, or worse those that support it .I was horrified to see the kind of backwardness still rampant in our country. This magnitude of female injustice and abuse calls into question my faight in humanity.Over 2000 villages were without a single female birth! Thats an entire society supporting an outdated and grotesque morale system. To hear firsthand one of the most appauling life stories I ever have and the depth of stuggle some have to go through has opened my eyes to the cause of feminism and where it should be focussed.

  8. this documentary shows the state of certain places in India and is a reminder to all indians that women should be treated in a better way. through the rapes and the girl abortions i realized that women shoukd be more respected. the good part was that some men really stood up for the women in the doc which shows that not all men are bad and the bad ones should be punished

Although the issue of crime against women is common knowledge, Son Rise was a true eye opener. It exposed the underlying issue of gender inequality and its magnitude in our society, and explained the roots of the problem. The documentary was heart-wrenching tear-inducing, but is one that definitely spurs its audience into action to improve our society.

  10. The documentary "son rise" was an amalgamation of a series of instances and eye-opening practices occurring in the state of Haryana. The purpose of the documentary was to create an impact, as much as we as a country attempt to subdue these old traditions, these patriarchal values are inevitably always present not only in the urban areas of our country but in major cities as well. I remember feeling extremely shocked and appalled at first even though I am familiarized and acquainted with such events, the severity of the crimes committed on the women of Haryana left me in a state of complete distort. The documentary brings out the raw and true feelings of the people of the state and it truly represents the significance and importance of such an issue as we develop as a nation.

  11. This documentary opened my eyes and made me aware of the struggles faced by female all over the world. Not only did the documentary portray the problems and effects of female foeticide but it also made is aware about why people in villages do so. Through the stories of Jitender and Kusum, we were made aware of the people who were already fighting for the rights of the women in the rural areas and also how these people need the help of people in towns and cities as well. Moreover, by listening to the story of Jitender we saw how many people were putting everything on the line to ensure justice is served and i feel that this story will inspire million of people not only within India but all over the world to rise up against this problem, which isn't just an Indian problem but is a world problem

  12. Today we say the documentary Son Rise, directed by Vibha Bakshi in the auditorium. The documentary is about gender inequality, female genocide and rape in Haryana, India. It shows the true story of what happens behind closed doors in one of the richest, most educated states in India. The movie sends a powerful message to all its viewers about the need to raise awareness for, and protect the rights of women but most importantly, it talks about the need to change the mindset of society. In Haryana, women are considered a burden. Families use pre natal detection of the child’s gender and kill her off before she is even born. However, the documentary does show some positive signs - some men fighting for the rights of women, local panchayats condemning the crimes. The documentary raises some thought provoking questions that will surely create more awareness about such issues and hopefully change the outlook of society towards women in a positive manner

  15. The documentary ‘Son Rise’ was created by Vibha Bakshi to portray gender inequality, that is a rising global issue. She showcased it in the state of Haryana, where it is most prevalent. It shows the only way women will be accepted into society by their family, is by giving birth to a son. This is why, the societal pressure is always present. It also shows the injustice to women when the rights they deserve are stolen from them, and they need someone to fight their fight with them. This does not only happen in villages with people with small and different mentalities, but is also present in the wealthy and educated society. This also shows how the rape of a woman has grown to affect not her, but everyone fighting alongside her for her justice. This event really touched all of our hearts, and the screening of this documentary is a very interesting way to raise awareness and help others get justice as well.

  16. An incredibly insightful documentary on multiple insufferable and heinous crimes against women that are simply disregarded and ignored. It expertly portrays the paradox between the appalling occurrence of criminals getting away effortlessly and the profound and overpowering steps taken by few men to stop these criminals. The documentary is truly touching and inspiring and also a great way to spread awareness of the issues faced by women worldwide.
