Freud on God

These quotes from Freud are interesting. However, if one considers that the Nazi ideology was based on a warped version of Darwin's theories, the 'survival of the fittest' translated into 'might is right' without compassion or empathy, we see that the human race did not progress to maturity in the twentieth century. Is it possible to build a moral ethical society without a belief in God, or does that absence of a 'higher power' or 'creator' lead to Hitler and Stalin? Alternatively, a counter-claim might be that religious wars have produced some of the most barbaric episodes in world history. Interesting questions, no easy answers.
